New Castle Public Library Wireless Internet Access

The library is now offering free wireless access to the Internet for any user with a wireless enabled laptop computer.

The Library currently supports the 802.11b, 802.11g and 802.11n standards for compatibility with public wireless devices.

The Library Internet Use Policy and user responsibilities apply to the wireless access computers, in addition to the computers provided by the library. See our policy here.

Q. How can I use the Wireless Internet at the library?

A. Most users can simply bring a wireless device to the library and turn it on. The library cannot guarantee your equipment will work with the library's network.


Q. Will I need special settings or passwords to connect?

A. No special setting, usernames, or passwords are required.


Q. Is my information safe while using wireless?

A. The Internet is a public communications network. Wireless poses the same risks to your personal information that a wired network poses, as well as some new risks. Cautious, informed users should choose not to transmit their credit card information or passwords while using any wireless "hot spot." Like most public wireless "hot spots," this connection is not secure. Potentially any information being sent or received could be intercepted by another wireless user. We cannot guarantee the security of any personal information that you transmit over the wireless connection. The library will not be responsible for any information that is compromised, or for any damage caused to your hardware or software due to security issues or consequences from viruses, hacking, or library systems.

It is solely the responsibility of the user to provide anti-virus protection. The library cannot and will not take responsibility for damages incurred for incorrect, insufficient, or incomplete security settings or lack of adequate or up to date anti-virus protection. Wireless users assume all risks in this regard.


Q. What is the service area of the wireless network?

A. Wireless service is available in almost all areas of the library. Structural features such as columns might block or reduce service.


Q. Does the wireless service support all Internet features?

A. Web browsing is available and web email services (i.e. Yahoo, Hotmail) can be checked. Email Clients such as Microsoft Outlook and Eudora are not supported.


Q. Can I search the library catalog and special databases using wireless?

A. Yes, both of these services are available.


Q. Can I print while using the wireless access?

A. No, printing is not available to the wireless network. If you need to print, please save your work to a disk.


Q. Does the library provide wireless cards or devices?

A. No, you must provide your own wireless device.


Q. Can the library staff help me configure my computer?

A. Sorry, due to the variety of hardware available, the library staff cannot help in the installation or setup of wireless equipment on any given laptop. The library cannot provide technical support or be held responsible for any damage whatsoever incurred by the user or the user's equipment as a result of using the wireless network.

The library cannot be responsible for any changes you make to your computer's settings. If you need additional assistance, you may need to contact the hardware or software manufacturer.

Configuration Settings

In many instances, wireless devices will automatically detect the library's wireless network. If your device does not connect, try the following:

1. Make sure your wireless network adapter has been properly installed according to the manufacturer's instructions and is enabled.

2. Use the management software that came with your wireless adapter to confirm that your settings match the values below.

Network Name: Library_wireless
WEP: Disabled
DHCP and DNS are set to obtain address automatically.

3. For added security if you are using a Windows PC, disable file sharing.

4. Save any modified settings and restart your device as required.
